Matt Sturgeon
Men's Life Coach, Business Mentor and Former Professional Athlete
I'm Matt Sturgeon, founder of Man Do Better.
For more than a decade, I've worked with men who want to improve the way they think, work, lead and live. My work sits somewhere between coaching, psychology, business mentoring and performance. I'm less interested in motivation for motivation's sake and more interested in helping someone understand what's actually holding them back, what needs to change, and what they need to do next.
I've worked with more than 2,800 men one-to-one across life, career, relationships, health, performance and business.
My Background
Before coaching became my career, I was a professional athlete. That environment taught me a lot about performance, discipline, pressure and identity, but it also showed me that being driven doesn't automatically mean you know where you're going.
After professional sport, I moved into coaching and performance work, and eventually began working more deeply with men around career, relationships, mindset, behaviour and personal direction.
Over the years, that work expanded beyond traditional coaching. I've built and operated a business, managed staff, and moved into property development, where I've helped complete multiple land subdivision projects. That experience has become an important part of how I now work with business owners and men trying to build something of their own.
I believe there's a real difference between teaching an idea and having lived through the decisions, pressure, uncertainty and consequences yourself. That's something I try to bring into every coaching conversation.
Qualifications
My formal education includes a Master's in Business and a Master's in Modern Psychology. I've also spent time working in the USA alongside San Francisco matchmaker Amy Anderson as a men's dating coach consultant, and supported stock traders working under extreme pressure to reduce noise and make cleaner decisions.
I've never believed qualifications alone make someone an effective coach. The value comes from combining sound frameworks with real experience, judgement, and the ability to understand the person sitting in front of you. That's the standard I try to work to.
How I Coach
Most men who come to me don't need another motivational speech. They usually need clarity.
They might know something is wrong without knowing exactly what it is. They might be doing well financially but struggling in their relationship. They might have a good family life but feel frustrated with their career. They might understand exactly what they should be doing but keep failing to follow through. Or they might simply feel like they've lost momentum.
My role is to help identify the real problem, simplify it, and turn it into something practical. That can involve career direction, discipline, emotional control, confidence, relationships, health, business, or a combination of several areas at once.
The goal isn't to make someone dependent on coaching. The goal is to help them think more clearly, act more deliberately, and become increasingly capable of solving their own problems.
Business Experience
I also work with business owners and men who are trying to build or grow a business. My approach to business mentoring comes from practical experience rather than theory alone. I've built a business with staff, worked across sales and marketing, and moved into property development, where I've been involved in sourcing, assessing, marketing and developing land. I've completed multiple subdivision projects and continue to work within property development alongside my coaching work.
That experience has shaped the way I think about business. Most businesses don't need fifty new strategies. They usually need to identify the current bottleneck, fix it, and then move to the next one. That might be lead generation. It might be sales. It might be pricing. It might be staff. It might be systems. Or it might simply be that the owner is spending all of their time solving the wrong problem. That's what my business mentoring work focuses on.
Who I Work With
I predominantly work with men who are ambitious but feel like one or more parts of their life aren't where they should be. Some are business owners. Some are professionals. Some are fathers. Some are changing careers. Some are rebuilding after a difficult period. And some are doing objectively well but know they're capable of operating at a much higher level.
They don't necessarily need their entire life rebuilt. Sometimes they simply need someone outside of it who can see the situation clearly. I work with clients online, so location isn't a barrier.
Man Do Better
I created Man Do Better around a simple idea. A man can improve almost any area of his life when he's willing to look at it clearly, take responsibility for what he can control, and consistently do the work required to change it. The aim isn't perfection. It's progress, direction and becoming more capable. Man Do Better exists to help men do exactly that.
